COMBINING MUSIC, SOUND AND THEATRE
A Bite In Time” – Akademie Schloss Solitude, Nov 1994.
My compositions often involve improvistorary processes for the voice and piano, in which I utilise improvisation as a compositional device, so the boundary between these practices can sometimes become blurred. I have explored the ultimate potentials of my 3 octave vocal range, and since childhood have developed a repertoire of extended vocal techniques involving microtones and atonal textures, inspired by the sounds around me ranging from birds, my toys and the opera singers from my father’s records. My works can therefore transform quickly between genres of jazz, scat, bel canto and microtonal.
“Mixed Salad”
During my year long residency at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart I created a “mobile” performance piece about food and eating at the Baroque Schloss, in three contrasting 30 minute long pieces. . Drawing on the architecture and history of the Schloss I constructed these works around narratives of food and eating., selecting the sites that best aligned with these themes. The performances were “linked” by an improvising Baroque trumpet player Paul Plunkett, acting as a “pied piper” leading the audience from site to site. This project included contributions by other artists resident at the Akademie during the same period.
