COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION
Jo Truman’s work moves fluidly between composition and improvisation, treating both as complementary processes rather than separate disciplines. Her music often begins with a conceptual or poetic impulse and evolves through exploration of sound, voice, and space.
Working primarily with voice and piano—often supported by electronics, looping, or collaborative performers—Jo creates pieces that combine structured musical ideas with the spontaneity of real-time creation. Improvisation becomes a way of discovering new sonic territories: extended vocal techniques, microtonal textures, rhythmic vocalisations, and shifting layers of sound.
Her compositional practice spans concert music, sound art, radiophonic works, and interdisciplinary performance. Works frequently weave together music, spoken text, and environmental soundscapes to create immersive listening experiences.
Improvisation remains central to Jo’s artistic language. It allows each performance to unfold uniquely in response to the moment, the acoustic environment, and the musicians involved. In this way, composition provides the architecture while improvisation opens the door to discovery.
Process
Jo’s compositional process often begins with listening—to place, to memory, to language, and to the expressive capacities of the human voice. Sketches may take the form of written scores, graphic notation, poetic texts, or simple musical motifs that can be expanded in performance.
Improvisation sessions then become laboratories for developing material. Through collaboration with instrumentalists, sound artists, and performers, musical ideas are shaped into works that balance form and freedom.
Collaboration
Collaboration plays a significant role in Jo’s creative practice. Over the years she has worked with improvisers, composers, visual artists, and electronic musicians in Australia and internationally. These partnerships allow the music to evolve beyond the individual voice, creating layered performances where sound, image, and narrative intersect.
Performance
Whether presented as a composed concert work, an improvised performance, or a multimedia installation, Jo’s music invites audiences into a vivid sonic landscape. Each performance becomes a living event—shaped by the space, the performers, and the act of listening itself.
Composition and Improvisation
Explanations
My compositions often involve improvistorary processes for the voice and piano, in which I utilise improvisation as a compositional device, so the boundary between these practices can sometimes become blurred. I have explored the ultimate potentials of my 3 octave vocal range, and since childhood have developed a repertoire of extended vocal techniques involving microtones and atonal textures, inspired by the sounds around me ranging from birds, my toys and the opera singers from my father’s records. My works can therefore transform quickly between genres of jazz, scat, bel canto and microtonal.
As a pianist I have studied classical piano from age five and at this early stage also had a strong interest in improvisation..
